ASTHMA FACTS

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the respiratory airways. Asthma has a multifactorial etiology including genetic, allergic, environmental, infectious, emotional, and nutritional factors.

There is also a positive association between cesarean delivery and occurrence of respiratory problems. Studies have found that delivery by cesarean showed an association with the diagnosis of asthma. Infants born through cesarean surgery have a greater risk of sensitization to food allergens.

There is increasing evidence that the underlying process driving and maintaining the asthmatic inflammatory process is an abnormal or inadequately regulated immune response to otherwise harmless environmental antigens. The end result of these complex interactions is a cascading immune and inflammatory response.

Vertebral subluxation is stressful to body tissues and can modulate specific and nonspecific immune responses and may alter the trophic function of the involved nerves.

If the structure of the spine is subluxated in such a way that it causes additional stress to the sympathetic nervous system this could lead to a heightened immune response causing an individual to react to environmental asthma triggers more easily.

CASE STUDY

The patient reported on in the study was a 38-year-old female with allergy induced asthma, which she had suffered from since she was a teenager. She also had a history of allergies, chronic sinus issues, headaches, and right leg numbness.

The chiropractor examined her and found structural shifts in her neck, mid back, and low back. She had decreased range of motion, tenderness, and muscle imbalance in her neck, mid back, lower back, and sacrum.

Following chiropractic care, she reported resolution of her asthma and her headaches, leg numbness, and sinus issues also improved.
