Improvement in Alpha Brain Waves, Coordination, and Emotional Regulation With Chiropractic

On August 10, 2017, the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health Published a case study showing improvement in developmental issues of a young girl after receiving chiropractic care for the correction of vertebral subluxations. A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of vertebrae of the spine affecting nerves and interfering with the brain body communication.

The authors of this study explain chiropractic care by the following definition, “Chiropractic is a health care disciploine that serves to optimize health through the principle that the body has an innate intelligence by which it sustains and maintains itself. Chiropractors place particular emphasis on the subluxation, which compromises neural integrity and can cause deleterious effects of health.”

The study explains the positive effects that subluxations has on people’s health by stating, “In recent years, the association between the correction of vertebral subluxation and quality of health has been studied in greater detail with objective measures showing what chiropractors have long been reporting anecdotally. Chiropractic care and the correction of vertebral subluxation have been associated with cases relating to improvements in quality of life, structural integrity, attention and development of language, among other aspects of health and wellness.”

In this case, a 7-year-old-girl began chiropractic care. The mother stated that her daughter was slow to attain skills and difficulty with coordination since birth; she ate with her hands and avoided using utensils. The mother described an increased frequency of long-lasting emotional outbursts over the last couple years.

After the chiropractic visit, the mother reported that the child began using silverware, and continues to be able to use silverware after eight weeks of care. Her emotional responses also were better regulated. The girl also showed improved coordination and decreased aversions to tasks requiring coordination.

The study authors recorded an improvement in the girl’s follow-up testing including the readings for heart rate and heart rate variability, skin temperature, respiration rate, paraspinal surface electromyography, and EEG, which showed improvement in the alpha brain waves.

In the conclusion the authors wrote, “This case reported the improvement in coordination and spontaneous utilization of silverware while self-feeding as well as improvement in emotional regulation following a 2-month period of subluxation-based chiropractic care... These changes coincide with an increase in alpha activity as measured in EEG, which suggest an increase in cognitive efficiency allowing greater capacity to learn, think, and be consciously relaxed. These changes are temporarily associated to chiropractic care and the correction of vertebral subluxations.”

Chiropractic for Allergies

Allergies are a disorder of the immune system. The immune system overreacts to a typically non-harmful substance (cat dander, pollen, peanuts, dairy products, dust, molds, etc.) and initiates a response to neutralize and flush out the allergen. The results of this immune response are swelling, itching, runny nose and eyes, sneezing, diarrhea, to name a few. The immune system is highly effective in ridding the body of what it perceives as harmful.

Chiropractic is not a treatment for allergies per se, but it has helped allergy sufferers for years. Chiropractic aims to remove interference to the nervous system by specifically correcting a condition called vertebral subluxation. What controls the immune system? Many things including your spleen, bone marrow, and adrenal glands to name a few. What controls all of these things? It is your brain and nervous system.

In 1993, a group of researchers at the University of Calgary discovered a group of cells at the top of the spinal cord that form a direct pathway from the nervous system to the immune system. Any interference to this pathway would likely result in an improperly functioning immune system.

A chiropractic study found that specific upper neck adjustments in HIV positive patients led to a 48% increase in CD4 cells (immune cells) over a 6-month duration. Preliminary studies have found that adjustments enhance the activity of IgA, IgG, IgM, and phagocytic cell respiratory bursts (all immune system functions). A properly functioning immune system is less likely to produce allergy symptoms.
